Wound Care

This information sheet explains how to take care of your wound.Your treatment took place on: _______________________________________________________________

Your wound has been cleaned with saline solution, and the following wound care has been applied:

Tissue Adhesive (glue)

Your cut has been closed using a special medical glue. The glue must stay in place until the wound has healed, which usually takes three to five days. The glue forms a protective layer similar to a scab. Do not pick at it. It will gradually fall off on its own. The glue tolerates only minimal contact with water.

Skin Closure Strips (butterfly stitches)

Leave the strips in place for ____ days.
Avoid getting the wound dirty. The strips tolerate only minimal contact with water. To remove the strips, pull both ends towards the wound. If needed, moisten the strips first.

Stitches

Contact your GP to have your stitches removed after ____ days.

Wound Dressing

Leave the dressing in place for ____ days.
Keep it dry and clean.
Change the dressing if it becomes wet or if blood seeps through.

Preventing and reducing scarring

  • Apply micropore surgical tape to the healed scar.
  • The tape should overlap the scar by about 1 cm.
  • Remove the tape before washing and reapply afterwards.
  • For best results, use the tape continuously for 3 months.

Pain relief

It is normal to experience some pain during the first 24 hours. This does not mean the wound is infected.

To reduce discomfort:

  • Rest the injured body part and keep it elevated above heart level.
  • You may take overthecounter pain medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

Signs of infection

Contact a healthcare professional if you notice:

  • Swelling around the wound
  • Pus
  • Increasing redness spreading from the wound
  • Increasing pain
  • Feeling generally unwell
  • Fever (38°C / 100.4°F or above)
  • Keeping the limb still can help reduce the risk of infection.

Tetanus vaccination

You have received a 10year tetanus booster: YesNo
